A vibrant study of one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century design, whose Romantic, whimsical, and wholly original style influenced a generation of architects and decorators. Oliver Messel was one of Englands foremost interior designers of the twentieth century, whose work also spanned the worlds of the stage design, film, and architecture. Born into a creative family of wealthy bankers, his career began in 1925 designing for Sergei Diaghilevs Ballets Russes. He eventually became an internationally celebrated designer, branching out into drama, film, opera, interior design, textiles, and architecture. Romanticism and eccentricity were hallmarks of Messels style. His sets were famed for their exquisite delicacy, impossible detail, subtlety of color, and inventive use of materials. From the 1930s to the postwar period, Messel explored the fields of interior design and architecture, eventually designing numerous houses built on the islands of Mustique and Barbados for the jet set of the 1960s and 70s, among them Antony Armstrong-Jones (Earl of Snowdon) and Princess Margaret. Oliver Messel is filled with previously unpublished images that chronicle a unique, eccentric, and, until now, largely overlooked oeuvre that reached across several mediums and continues to influence insiders from the worlds of interior design, architecture, and fashion.Edited by Thomas Messel with an introduction by Lord Snowdon, an epilogue by Anthony Powell and texts by Stephen Calloway, Keith Lodwick, Jeremy Musson, and Sarah Woodcock Antony Armstrong-Jones 1st Earl of Snowdon - Wikipedia Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones 1st Earl of Snowdon GCVO RDI (7 March 1930 13 January 2017) commonly known as Lord Snowdon was a British photographer Remembering Peter Farmer (19362017) - Royal Opera House Peter Farmer a painter and leading figure in British theatre design has died Farmer worked extensively in ballet both with The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal What to Do in Barbados Right Now - Cond Nast Traveler Its barely 6 pm on a Friday night and already theres a line forming at Oistins To the uninitiated the cheerful outdoor fish fry in this sleepy south coast Lord Snowdon is laid to rest at secluded Welsh church Lord Snowdon was today laid to rest at a secluded Welsh church during an intimate funeral attended by just a handful of close family and friends In an understated 1960 Oscarsorg Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Supporting Actress winner for The Diary of Anne Frank with presenter Edmond O'Brien Writing Jeremy Musson I am very privileged to write about the subjects I love: architecture history the arts and people of culture I have written on a great range of houses including Slade School of Fine Art - Wikipedia The UCL Slade School of Fine Art (informally The Slade) is the art school of University College London (UCL) and is based in London United Kingdom Review: The Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty HuffPost UK The Sleeping Beauty has a lot working in its favour: the choreography is created by the undisputed master of the Ballet Blanc era Marius Petipa and later given a Autumn art lectures Public and Ceremonial Events Office 615 pm Wills Memorial Building Queens Road Bristol BS8 1RJ Oliver Messel was Englands most celebrated theatrical designer He began his career in 1925 The History of Mustique the legendary private island in History of Mustique As legends go the The Aristocrat the Princess and the Rockstar is pretty good only this wasnt a legend it was true
